Take a Walk on the Wireless Side
You love your laptop. Maybe you’re on your lappy right now. And you hate pesky wires”"all they do is hold you back. Well, Philly is well on its way to becoming the nation’s first completely wireless major city. It’s a work in progress, but you can give the network a try now at these pilot locations: Historic Square Mile; Love Park and Benjamin Franklin Parkway; Olney; West Kensington/Norris Square.
Here’s how it works: Simply hit the “search for wireless networks” feature on your computer and click on the SSID “Feather Free by EarthLink.”ÂÂ
In addition to the pilot areas, the City is currently installing a 15 square-mile proof of concept area that includes more than a dozen neighborhoods (see the map). In this region from October through December, EarthLink will test the technology and the processes by which people can subscribe to the service.
The rest of the city will be rolling out the wireless installation on a zone-by-zone basis. Philadelphia”"all 135 square miles of it”"is scheduled to be fully wireless by the fall of 2007.
