Taste the Old World at New Wave

If you’ve spent any time in Port Richmond, you’ve probably already been to the New Wave Cafe. I was first taken there for pierogies, which were made in the back by, I believe, the elderly woman who was peeking out from behind the kitchen door. New Wave Cafe is the kind of place where if you’re not really Polish–and you get the sense they can tell just by looking–you’re the outsider, and I LOVE this kind of place.
In addition to Polish standards (kielbasa, pierogies, borscht), they have pickle soup on the menu. They don’t always have the pickle soup in the kitchen, but it’s always on the menu. This soup is warm and tangy, heavy on the dill in a good way, and unlike any other soup I’ve had. I’ve been there a bunch and have never been dissatisfied. Check out the Polish market around the corner on Richmond Street while you’re in the neighborhood.

Is this the same New Wave Cafe that’s also just south of South on (I think) 3rd?

No, it’s a completely different place with the same name, although I haven’t tried the 3rd street cafe.

The New Wave has been on my restaurant hit list for a while now. I don’t like feeling like an outsider though. And I don’t think the fact that I’m from Port Richmond and 25% Polish would help me avoid the stares there. What’s a girl to do?

“Outsider” is too negative a word. New Wave is more like when you visit another country and don’t speak the language. I don’t speak Polish, but I’ve been many times and everyone is always so nice. On more than one occasion, the regulars have bought drinks for my friends and me. And my friends don’t speak Polish either!

My girlfriend lives across the street and I pick up the Hungarian potato pancakes there all the time. We’ve even gone there with a group of friends, and the service was always good, the food excellent. Gets a little wild on Sat night, but what bar doesn’t?
