Best Lunch After Paying a Parking Ticket
For what may have been two years I couldn’t park at any meter anywhere in the city without getting a ticket. Was this problem karmic? Maybe. Was I plain not paying attention and forgetting when to put another quarter in? Maybe. Was it a subconscious conspiracy against myself in order to satisfy my unquenchable desire for crepes? Maybe.
A few days after each incident I’d ride down to the Parking Authority at 9th and Filbert, slip my payment through the slot and turn my eyes up to the only thing that could make me feel better about having done it again. The thing that brought me satisfaction time and again in this city of diligent parking officers is and will continue to be delicious crepes, made to my specification in minutes, and just a block away from where I pay my tickets.
I’ve been to Profi’s in the Reading Terminal Market over and over. If you’re downtown (and hopefully on more pleasant, non-Parking Authority business) looking for good, hot food but you’re pressed for time and cash, the little stand is among the best cheesesteak alternatives. You can sit in or take out – either way the turnaround is diner-snappy and you get exactly what you want. Turkey, feta, onions, peppers, mushrooms and spinach with dijon on an herb crepe? I’ve done it. At $5.55, you might consider it too. If you’re driving, park in the garage on 12th and Filbert–it’s just $2 for two hours with an endorsement from any place in the terminal. If you dare park on the street, beware: tickets cost more than they used to.
