Go Underground, Young Man
As one of the last few places in the U.S. with actual seasons, Philly can be rather chilly at times. Around November or December each year, the temperature takes a nosedive and suddenly getting around town on bike or foot seems mildly unreasonable and/or crazy.
Well, lest you break the bank on cabs from now until April, there are ways to beat the winter beast. Sure, you could take the bus, but where’s the fun in that? If you happen to find yourself in Center City around Broad and Locust, there are small stretches of underground walkway that you can take to get around. One stretch begins at the 12-13 Locust PATCO stop (you’ll recognize it by the red railing) and ends at 16th and Locust. You’ll traverse under Broad Street and can easily pick up the Broad Street subway line if you like. Another stretch of walkway goes from 13th and Market to 16th and JFK. There’s an entire underground concourse there of shops and restaurants, too.
So when it’s 10 below you can head below.
