Philly Cheesesteak Battle: Chubby’s vs. Dalessandro’s
Once upon a time, in a land not so far away, there stood two rival Philly cheesesteak establishments. They inhabited opposite corners of the same intersection of the same blue-collar neighborhood. Their steaks were known far and wide for their flavor, freshness and delectability. And they inspired schisms so deep between their disciples that it was not uncommon for blood relatives to come to blows while arguing for their candidate.
Pat’s and Geno’s? Please.
At the corner of Henry Avenue and Wendover Street in Roxborough stand Chubby’s and Dalessandro’s–northwest Philly’s answer to the cheesesteak hegemony of their more famous southside cousins.
Chubby’s has more seating, and it has cheese fries. It also has a bar where you can order Bacardi 151 starting at 9 a.m., an amenity that more people take advantage of than you might think. The steaks are massive; the price, miniscule. Six dollars and change will get you a cheesesteak, cheese fries and a soda. Chubby’s also stays open until 2 a.m.
Dalessandro’s, on the other hand, has fewer amenities, but sports the larger and tastier cheesesteak. It closes early, the service is slow, and finding a seat around the crowded counter can be a nightmare. But the fresh rolls, towering piles of shredded beef, and perfectly meted provolone make it all worthwhile. I admit it, I’m a Dals man. Now excuse me while I go fistfight my brother.

Contact says:
Chubby should serve their sandwiches with a wheelchair and a nose clip. The smug rudeness at del’s grates on anyone expecting hospitality with their purchase. Their sandwiches are popular because competition in this struggle-hood is even lamer
