Carnivores: Start your Engines

Fogo de Chao

All you need to know is:

GREEN = Yes, please. I would love some meat.
RED = For the love of God man, I just can’t eat any more meat.

When Fogo de Chão opened the doors to its newest location on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia my seriously carnivorous friends were chomping at the bit. So, the very week it opened we reserved a table for eight and started counting the minutes. You see, this is nor ordinary steakhouse. It’s a Churrascaria, which means meat, meat, and more meat. Here, there’s no “dinner envy” because there is no ordering. You get meat and all you can eat for $50 per person.

When you are seated the waiter takes a drink order just like any other restaurant. Then, he directs your attention to a salad bar of sorts filled with lovely cheeses, sliced salami, salads, smoked fish, olives, and such”¦ And while this is all yummy and wonderful, please don’t get too distracted. You see, this is just a warm-up to the main event.

OK, now you take a deep breath and a generous gulp of wine and carefully turn your “disk” pictured above to GREEN. Within minutes there will be Gauchos all around ready to slice pieces of perfectly fire-roasted Filet Mignon, Costela, or Corderio right on to your plate. Fogo’s menu boasts 15, seriously 15 different cuts of meat including beef, pork, lamb and chicken. It’s crazy and it just keeps coming. It’s all about the espeto corrido–Portuguese for continuous service. Just keep flipping your disk to start and stop the flow of food. And for the love of all things decent”¦ Please. Pace yourself.

*Tip “” Plan to walk home. The exercise really will make you feel better.

I’m a vegetarian and even I want to check out this place. That’s right, after 10 years without meat I am going to give in just because of this post. God bless you Libby.

My fiance and I are have visited Fogo de Chao three times with a bunch of our friends. We usually go for their lunch, which is all you can eat meat for $25 from Monday to Friday and they served the same 15 varieties of meat. For vegetarian, you can have unlimited serving of their delicious salad bar for $20. Their salad bar is amazing as well.

I starved myself all day in advance of a 4 p.m. dinner reservation (hey, it was Sunday!) and even then, I was tapped out after a few slices of meat. But it’s so good.
