It’s Easy to Love E’s

E's Passyunk

Philly’s newest café has a sign with a photo of a baby wearing sunglasses that might make passers by think its just another of the many kids’ clothing stores found up and down this southern stretch of Passyunk Avenue. But don’t worry–it’s just the owner’s son, Emmerson, and he and his mom, Jill Ross, are as much fixtures of the café as dad Andrew Michaels. Michaels opened E’s January 6th and says he’s had close to 1,000 customers in just his first week. He says he wants E’s to be a real neighborhood spot and he’s happy to have such a warm reception from neighbors young and old.

With pastries whipped up in-house by Ross, who owns a cookbook stall in the Reading Terminal Market, and more substantial food expected in February, E’s fills a need in South Philly. The café will have outdoor seating come spring and displays the works of local artists. The teal walls currently showcase photos from a student program, but Michaels says he’s scouting for other artists for coming months. Joining tiny Benna’s café just a few blocks over, E’s is one of the only places south of Washington to chill out with a mocha and wireless connection.
