Memorializing the Dickens out of Dickens
Charles Dickens came to Philly, hung out with Poe for a while, went home, wrote some novels and then decreed that no physical marker ever be erected in his memory. But Dickens, this is Philadelphia–you don’t tell us who we can and can’t make statues out of. Unsanctioned and completely without the blessing of the Dickens estate, the only existing representation of the novelist resides unassuming in Clark Park at 43rd and Chester. It’s a life-sized bronze cast inscribed, “Dickens and Little Nell,” and I’m thankful that we disobeyed a master’s dying wishes every time I pass it.
