Weekend Picks
___Ongoing___
Look Again: African American History IS American History
Rosenbach Museum
The Rosenbach’s Black History Month exhibition wraps up on Sunday, but there’s still time to drop in. Look Again “includes the first book published by an African-American, selections of abolitionist material, collections of sugar bowls and tobacco boxes whose original contents were produced with slave labor, and much more. By asking ‘What gets saved and why?,’ we will address issues of interpretation, accident, and (re)interpretation of objects in the Rosenbach collections.” 10 a.m.-5 p.m. all week, $8.
___Friday___
Half Cocked and Radiation
International House
3701 Chestnut Street
Double feature by husband-and-wife Suki Hawley and Michael Galinsky. The former, from ’94, features Ian Svenonius in a fictional black-and-white tale of hopelessly shut in indie rock in pre-Internet Louisville. The latter, from ’99, is about a shyster European who tries to make good when his band buddies ditch him. Both scored by tunes that are heavily dated in the best possible way. 7p.m., $7 or $5 for students/members/seniors.
The Subjects / Golden Ball / The End of the World
Pilam
3914 Spruce
Equal parts embarrassment, conundrum and hilarious West Philly music establishment, the Pi Lambda Phi fraternity at the University of Pennsylvania is having shows in their house once again. This thirty-odd year tradition of being vaguely punk but mostly still fratty continues Friday, and the current guard have been doing a decent job with their charge. Queue billions of “Louie Louie” and Revenge of the Nerds jokes, but whatever, there aren’t too many other college parties with decent bands that are glad to see you when you’re past 25. Die-hards, take advantage. 9 p.m., supposedly $5.
___Saturday___
Monkey Bar Nights
Bridget Foy’s Restaurant
2nd and South
An old-timey 1940′s-era nightclub affair featuring live music, showgirls, complimentary hors d’eouvres, souvenir photos, and who knows what else, put together by R5 Productions alumnus and gentleman Brian Adoff. Possibly the sleeper party of the weekend–doors at 8:30 p.m., $20, $15 here.
The Order of Things
The Wagner Free Institute
1700 West Montgomery Avenue
“This world premiere piece by British sound artist Scanner will feature an electro-acoustic installation and performance inspired by the tercentenary of Swedish scientist Carolus Linnaeus (1707-1778), the father of modern taxonomy. The work was specifically created for the Wagner [...]” Saturday and Sunday, 2-5 p.m., $30 / $10 students.”
___Sunday___
Panic. Smiths/Morrisey DJ Night
Upstairs at Sal’s
200 S 12th
And when the weekend’s up, there’s still one party that never goes out. Upstairs at Sal’s, Smiths and Morrisey keep it going until you cry your way to work in the cold, cold morning.
