Uwishunu’s Weekend Picks
***Friday***
Nels Cline and Toshi Makihara, Charles Cohen and Yanni Papadopoulos, Rick Iannacone and John Swana
Avant Gentlemen’s Lodge
4028 Filbert St.
Philly’s avant oldheads playing it brutal duo style at the Gentlemen’s Lodge. The night’s visiting professor is Nels Cline (of Wilco, among zillions of other things), named “The World’s Most Dangerous Guitarist” by Jazz Times. His partner is local improvisational drum wizard Toshi Makihara who, might play Derek Bailey-style free and minimal, or might just blast. Cohen/ Papadopoulos promises filthier weird grooves–Charles plays a constructed synth and Yanni is a monster of a guitarist. You know the all-black Phillies caps with the P in black thread? This is jazz’s version of that.
Hands and Knees with John Redden and Ian St. Laurent
M Room (http://www.themanhattanroom.com/shows.htm)
15 W Girard Ave.
Fun is awesome! There will be free Pabst and Vitavodka from 10-11, while it lasts, and $2 Vitaminwater and vodka for the duration. It’s $5, 21+ and it gets ridiculous up in there.
***Saturday***
Rova: Orkestrova = Electric Ascension
International House
3701 Chestnut Street
Part of Ars Nova’s continuing Seraphic Light series in celebration of John Coltrane’s 80th Birthday. Rova: Orkestrova = Electric Ascension is the Rova Saxophone Quartet and a big band of seven other heavy improvisers. Nels Cline is on this bill too, as is Fantomas/Mr. Bungle bassist Trevor Dunn. They’ll be playing Coltrane’s masterwork Ascension in its entirety.
Event: Yo La Tengo
Trocadero (http://www.thetroc.com/)
1003 Arch St.
The heroes of indie rock, possibly the all-time most played band on college radio. They will play two long jams that are 15 minutes each, they might get dudes from the Arkestra to join them for a while, and they will play forty minutes of songs. YLT are one of the most charming and consistently fun bands for ancient fans and total noobs alike.
