Topstitch 2I’m not rich, so First Friday can sometimes be a bit of a bummer. Lots of great art, none of it even remotely in my price range (moderately poor to scraping the table). Which is why I’m so psyched for Topstitch’s opening on Friday. A collaboration between designers from Honeymilk, Kinked Works and Babooshka, Topstitch features affordable art, charming hand-crafted pieces and reconstructed vintage clothing, and to-die-for accessories (I’m obsessed with Cholita’s hair combs festooned with tiny feather charms).

Topstitch was conceived as a space, says Babooshka’s Francesca Sloan, where the designers could have a retail space and work space as well. Which means that “we can fit the clothes around you. We do free alterations, within reason,” she adds.

This Friday’s opening will feature the requisite drinks and DJs, plus works from photographer Isaac Schell. His collection of photos, entitled “Bars. Churches. Beauty Salons” draws upon the parallels between the public spaces.

Opening: Friday, March 2. 6-10 p.m.

I am really really looking forward to this. I LOVED Honeymilk and think all those gals are on the right track!
