Ping-Pong+Philly Special=Happy Hour

Pingpong at Bob and Barbara

Forget Mondays–I’ve got no problem with Mondays–it’s the Tuesdays that always get me. I’m always exhausted, completely cranky at the prospect of not knowing more than three answers at Locust Bar quizzo, and by day’s end totally ready to fold.

How do I regain my composure on this most miserable of days, when the joys of the weekend are faded, and future Fridays are still so far away? Well, I usually take a nap, but last week I went to Bob and Barbara’s for happy hour. This joint is the Batman of Philly’s Justice League of dive bars, and likely the seat of Pabst Blue Ribbon’s global power. Pabst gear and advertisements cover the walls, and the bar is one of few to serve the vaunted “Philly Special”–a can of Pabst and a shot of Jim Beam for $3.

A friend told me she’d take me to check out their Tuesday ping-pong setup, and sure enough, there it was waiting for us–two tables complete with Pabst paddles free for use. I was hoping for some ping-pong wizards to come in and zap balls back and forth with a savant’s clean and accurate hand, or sharks who would let my klutz game slide into a victory in the hopes of taking my cash in a double-or-nothing, but we were there a little too early for that action.

I had other business last week and couldn’t hang out, but sharks and wizards of the Internet take note: I’m looking for you on Tuesdays at Bob and Barb’s, circa 6 p.m., and on into the South Street night.
