Jazz people: tonight at eight, Ars Nova presents the Instant Composers Pool. Founding members Misha Mengelberg (keys) and Han Bennink (drums of death), both contemporaries of the late English guitar mastermind Derek Bailey, have been working under the ICP moniker since the sixties. Their band has expanded over the years to a cast of ten, and their “instant composition” has shifted to “conducted improvisation.” The group is known to lay down some wild Thelonious Monk, Herbie Nichols, and blasted Duke Ellington – if you’ve got even a peripheral interest in wild jazz, this is totally worth a stop for the price.
