johns.jpgJohn’s Roast Pork. If you’re a pork eater, go there now. If you’re a pork eater, you might already know about this place, or if you’re a Target shopper you might already know about this place or have seen it. It’s the little shack of a spot between the South Philly Target and the Lowe’s, off Delaware Ave. I had seen John’s Roast Pork for a while and I was either in too big a rush running errands or it was closed. It’s only open from 6:45am (for the waterfront workers) until 2:30pm, so it’s easy to miss. Man alive, it was the best pork sandwich I’d ever eaten.

When we went, John’s was super busy but the line went fast. You can get a cheesesteak there and it looked awesome, but I was there for the pork. You can get it with cheese and onions and peppers (basically the same fixins you can get on a cheesesteak), but we got ours with just onions. I don’t like messing with the sweet of a pork sandwich with peppers, but I know that many people do. In shape and concept, the sandwich is similar to a cheesesteak: greasy like a cheesesteak, but the run-off is a little closer to gravy. It’s a nice sandwich and John’s is a shack-y mom and pop style place I love.

My friend and I split a large, which was plenty big for the two of us. A single human getting a large is possibly a VERY unhealthy person, so if you go there and notice the large sandwiches being served up and think to yourself, “Hmm, yes, a large, for just me. I can eat that whole thing right now in a single sitting,” you may want to jog over to your doctor’s office for some kind of cardiogram.

Libby Says:

I’ve been eyeing this place forever. I’m only in that neighborhood on Saturdays for my weekend errands…target, lowes, monster pets…) and like you said, it’s closed! Now that I know the hours, I’ll make a point to get there. Thanks.

You are so right. This is the place to go for cheesesteaks, roast beef or roast pork sandwiches. The line might look long, but it goes fast, and you’ll be glad you waited.

I am SO going there for a cheesesteak tomorrow!
