An Afternoon of Historical Thought
Looking for something enriching to do Saturday, April 28th at 3pm? Stop by Taller Puertorriqueño’s Julia de Burgos Books & Crafts store, for an afternoon of historical thought during its Meet the Author Series.
In addition to the many programs offered by Taller, the Meet the Author Series is a free program offered by Teller’s Julia de Burgos Books and Crafts Store one Saturday a month from January to October. It’s a time to enjoy an afternoon of engaging dialogue with writers of different literary disciplines.
The series will continue with Dr. Rolando Morelli where he will present Layka Froyka: El romance de cuando yo era niña and Cuentos y Relatos. The first novel is the autobiography of Emilia Bernal Omen written in the city of New York in 1919 and published for the first time in Madrid six years later. The novel is a matter of an unknown work by the Spanish speaking public in general.
“These stories correspond respectively to Emilia Bernal Omen and to José MarÃÂÂa Heredia which constitute a rescue incapable of being put off of the Cuban cultural and literary bequest, particularly, and Hispanic in a more extensive sense,” said Dr. Morelli.
When asked about the importance of these novels, Dr. Morelli said it was self-explanatory. “When one returns to look at an album of family photos to discover or re-discover the profile of a grandfather, the look of an aunt, the postage of our parents or the gawky air of our childhood we rescue a fundamental part of ourselves, that although seems to correspond to the past is truly present time and projection of future.”ÂÂ
Dr. Morelli has published Algo está pasando (stories, Hawaii), that will appear again in bilingual edition; Varios personajes en busca de Pinocho (theater for children, Cuba) and Leve para el viento (poetry, Paraguay). His works have been collected in several anthologies.
Dr. Morelli was born in 1953, in Horsens, Denmark. At the age of six he traveled to Cuba with his parents where he grew up in Camagüey. He lived there until 1980. Dr. Morelli received his degree with the highest academic distinctions from Temple University. He is currently a professor in the Department of Tongues and Foreign Literatures at La Salle University.
Copies of Layka Froyka: El romance de cuando yo era niña and Cuentos y Relatos are available for purchase. This free presentation will be followed by a book signing.

Wow! Dr. Morelli is a great presenter! It’s amazing how he takes these books that were buried and brings them to life.
