Scrapplefest: Wait, It’s Made Out Of What?!

scrapplefest.jpg

This weekend, on Saturday, April 21st, the Reading Terminal Market will be throwing Scrapplefest, a festival dedicated to what is essentially a Philadelphia original, and technically the first pork food product invented here in America.

Philadelphia is so proud of this fact, that at this year’s Scrapplefest, there will be cooking demonstrations with area chefs, samplings, photos with (scrapple?) mascots, cook book signings, and much more. There are even children’s activities, perhaps some sort of Scrapple Theme Park? Who knows!

You can join in the Scrapplefest by creating your own piece of scrapple related art. Check out the Reading Terminal Market website for more details and contact information.

And for those of you who don’t know what scrapple is”¦

Scrapple - is a savory mush in which cornmeal and flour are simmered with pork scraps and trimmings, then formed into a loaf. Small scraps of meat left over from butchering, too small to be used or sold elsewhere, were made into scrapple to avoid waste, a Pennsylvania Dutch tradition…

Read more about Scrapple at Wikipedia, and don’t miss the festivities.

I “discovered” scrapple in the old Food Right at 15th & Spruce when i moved to Philly almost 11 years ago… “What the hell is this? Why is it grey? Is it for people?” Still, I have never ever tried it. I’m a bit scared. What if it’s gross. Or worse yet, what if I LOVE it. It can’t be good for me? I’m sure it’s very high in fat. And I know it ain’t kosher… At any rate, in honor of Scrapplefest, I’m gonna try it. Who’s with me?

Karen says:

I used to love love love scrapple. My mom is from the Philly area but moved to Indianapolis 30+ years ago. We’d go back every summer to visit with her family, and I have fond memories of eating scrapple and porkroll, neither of which can be purchased here. I think I miss the porkroll more though.

Libby: As a born and bred Allentownian, I feel it is my duty to share with you, the GLORY that is scrapple. Listen people, do you ask what’s in hotdogs?!? Of course not! Are they healthy for you (not talking about soy versions) – no! But do they taste good? YES! Do we eat them on the 4th of July? Of course we do?! Scrapple is a strictly don’t ask-don’t tell policy. You fry it up in a pan…the outside gets all crispy and the inside is luscious goodness. Oh yes. It is. Now here’s the secret – you put a little maple syrup on it, like when your breakfast sausage rolls into your French Toast and *voila* – it’s a party in your mouth!

Libby says:

Alrighty then, Annie. It’s on! You and me at Scrapplefest. Saturday, Saturday, Saturday! Bring it… the syrup, that is.

Cathy says:

Ewwwww! You don’t use syrup on scrapple, Libs. Ketchup is the condiment of choice!

April 18, 2007, 3:54 pm

AlexaG says:

I use syrup. And Caroline, I only eat it when my Mom makes it.

April 18, 2007, 3:54 pm

Libby says:

Ketchup, Syrup, whatever. Anyway you slice it and then fry it…scrapple is NOT GOOD. Yes, I did it. I went to scrapplefest. I tasted the pork scrapple and the turkey scrapple and did not enjoy either. Sorry guys. I tried. Maybe it’s something you have to be raised on from early childhood to appriciate.

Finally a day to honor me, the king of all breakfast meats. I would like to invite all of you to get past my hard crunchy exterior and taste the warm salty goodness in my heart. I would be pleased to meat you. http://www.myspace.com/breakfastcandy
