Black Lily Spotlight: DJ Rekha

rekha.jpgWith Black Lily getting closer, we thought it’d be a great idea to feature some of the fantastic artists showcasing their work and performing at the festival, so you can get a good idea of what you’re in for. And believe me, you’re certainly in for a treat.

DJ Rekha, named one of the most influential South Asians in the United States by Newsweek, will be performing the first night, Friday, May 4th, at World Live Cafe for the Black Lily Reunion Concert. This concert also features special performances from the Jazzyfatnastees, Kindred the Family Soul, and Nouveau Riche.

Rekha has played and spun along side famed, multi-platinum artists like Outkast, The Roots (playing on the last day of Black Lily), LeTigre, Devo and Rah Digga.

She’s not limited to rocking out and spinning in the clubs though! Rekha was recently selected by Sarah Jones to help with her Obie Award winning play, Bridge & Tunnel, produced by none other then the multiple Academy Award winning actress Meryl Streep. She also serves on the board of Breakthrough, a human rights organization, and takes the time off to lecture at colleges and institutions about the art of DJing.

Check her out at the World Cafe Live when she comes into Philadelphia for Black Lily, and learn a little more about her from this CNN clip.

rekha… can’t dj. anyone who has actually heard or seen her spin would say the same. if i could hear her mix a whole hour…and i mean beatmatch them songs then she would have the right to call herself a dj.
