It’s the… Weekend!
FRIDAY_
The Teeth – Record Release
Johnny Brenda’s
New record from these dudes! See Meg’s thing below. JB’s tonight, $10, 8pm.
Otasanek
The Khyber
For the real April 20th of the Year of Our Lord 2007 crew, there is nowhere else to be. Legendary 16 year old ear-crusher crew Bastard Noise is headlining this action, and Providence’s The Body will be doing the drum and guitar duo thunder for black hoodies and ponderous beards, but for real, get out for Otasanek. It’s the second to last show for these West Philly sludgers, whose burning tar-pit and black smoke sound will be much missed by this fan of the dark and monstrous. Definitely due to be the most visceral, mighty eye of any storm on 2nd Street tonight. $8, 9pm.

And to fully round things out, whoa, serious modern music axis Pauline Oliveros is in town today and Sunday. Her influence is as difficult to overstate as it is to summarize – Ars Nova calls her fields “improvisation, meditation, electronic music, myth and ritual.” She worked closely with Terry Riley and has collaborated with Sonic Youth and Anthony Braxton. She’s performing new pieces on Sunday and at the head of her Horns of Hathor quartet tonight. Read full description at Ars Nova. Thanks again, guys. $20, 8pm.
SATURDAY_
First Annual Philadelphia Book Festival
Free Library of Philadelphia, 19th and Vine
There are so, so many incredible, free things at this festival that I can’t list it all. The performer’s schedule is here – definite highlights include Harry and the Potters and none other than punk’s Athena, Patti Smith! All free, 11am-7pm.
Bar Mitzvah Disco Party
Marathon Grill @ Commerce Sq, 2001 Market
The premise: When you’re thirteen, you can’t possibly enjoy your Bar/Bat Mitzvah nearly as much as you can when you’re an adult, presumably because when you are thirteen you can’t legally have drinks. 1980s and 70s dress requested, two drink tickets and appetizers included with admission, and lots of “Bar/Bat Mitzvah style surprises.” $30, 9pm.
SUNDAY_

Day two of the book fest. Awesome, ancient underground comics hero Kim Deitch will be up in there, and you will have what is likely your only opportunity in life to talk to RL Stine about his process. All free, 11am-7pm.
