Space 1026
Worlds unto themselves, Space 1026, one of Philadelphia’s oldest and largest collectives, began by revamping a funky two-story Chinatown loft once owned by a jewelry-making company. With its relatively cheap rent, Space 1026 has carved a gallery, a performance space, print and design workshops, shared studios and a gift shop.
It exploded into the “alternative art scene” and over the past four years has gained over 30 resident artists. Artists who show in the gallery bring a melting pot of disciplines and backgrounds. Along with throwing parties and alternative openings in Philadelphia, the artists have pilgrimaged with exhibition tours that are both national and international.
Dubbed a “10 year experiment,” the group was first organized in 1997. Known for their fun spirit, Space 1026 has created a world in which art is lived and artistic concepts can develop organically. Space 1026 has been successful in maintaining that experiment and continues to grow.
Art exhibitions are scheduled for each month, and performances and events are held within the gallery space all throughout the month.
