I’ve been riding a bicycle almost everyday for eight years. I know basic maintenance, but I’ve always been more interested in the love of riding my bicycle than flashy components or keeping up with the latest trends in bicycle technology. Therefore, every time I enter a bike shop, I am overcome with such anxiety caused by the usually pompous mechanic who wants to show off his manhood through his knowledge of bike lingo, that I stutter over remembering the word for ‘presta’ valve.
Then I discovered the “Bicycle Stable” on Frankford Avenue, and now I can ask for parts and maintenance for my run down, scratched up Miyata without feeling unworthy of being a bicyclist. Chaz, the owner is always readily available to help with questions or to give information about the bikes for sale hanging from the ceiling above. I work next to the shop, so I first stopped in almost a year ago to see what it had to offer. It has expanded since then, and Chaz has some mechanics working for him. Now at the “Bicycle Stable” you can buy a refurbished cruiser or a Bianchi. But more importantly, you will receive service that cares about helping you and your bicycle without a pretentious attitude.
Most recently, I was saved when my back wheel was stolen and he fixed me up with a used single speed for a mere forty bucks. Before that, I ran over from work right before they closed and since he didn’t take visa and I had not cash nor time to run to the ATM, he gave me a tube and trusted me to pay him the next day. Not that I would expect such treatment again, but I think that this act of kindness was a testament to the honest, bike-loving vibes of Chaz and his shop.

I second this article. Chaz truly loves cycling and is not too cool for you. A refreshing taste of professional service in a city with too many bike shops too cool for you.

While the Bicycle Stable is not the only unpretentious bike shop in the city, (many of them have actually really nice employees are often treated like dirt by their customers….)they are certainly one of the few shops who have expert mechanics on staff and frame repair capabilities. And yeah… Chaz is pretty great…
