Have a Seat at the Set Table

If I had never moved to Brewmount (a small area between the Art Museum / Fairmount Area and Brewery Town) I would have definitely moved to the sloping, sleepy hills of East Falls. A ten minute drive from Center City down Kelley Drive, and an even easier trek by the R8 regional rail, I personally find it an ideal neighborhood, with perfect parts charm and big city access.

Once upon a time, the gem of East Falls was a secret breakfast spot smack in the middle of a completely residential street called Indian Queen Lane. It was called Hidden River. With animal-shaped pancakes and Rowers Special (meat meat and more meat), french-pressed coffee and potatoes to die for, this place was the spot to be on a late Sunday when every other place in town was mobbed. As circumstance would have it, Hidden River quietly closed last year, but luckily a new proprietor stepped in, painted the place, and changed the name to The Set Table.

The charm is still there (so are the tables made of old doors) and instead of being opened only on the weekends, Set Table is open 7-3 daily (Tues-Fri) and 9-3 on weekends. Plus proprietor/caterer Shannon Stewart is organizing BYOB Poetry Readings and Open Mic Nights throughout the year. To top it off, Stewart has started to roast and blend her own line of organic fair trade coffee called Alchemy, which is totally roasted on premises. But we’ll save those details for later.
