Neither a Whistle Stop Cafe nor an Alley

I wish I could have gone to the fictional Whistle Stop Cafe for one reason and one reason only: to discover what Fried Green Tomatoes really taste like. Luckily Philly’s own Devil’s Alley has the answer: they taste good.
I’m pretty obsessed with tomatoes, but I didn’t know if this would extend to the unripe ones. I mean entirely different demographics of people prefer either greenish bananas or their yellow/brownish counterparts. Still, the second I heard there were fried green tomatoes to be eaten in Center City, I knew that was something I wanted to try.
My fried green tomato appetizer arrived looking like a plate of tomato-slice-shaped eggplant parmesan. Cutting into one of the slices, I could tell that the tomatoes were still very firm and not at all mushy (as a tomato lover, I hate mushy tomatoes above all else), and the color was indeed a pale green! I don’t know what else I could have expected, but I think this affirmation made them taste even better. I thought the tomatoes were subtly flavorful and was only somewhat distracted by the distracting breading and marinara sauce–although no complaints about the cheese.
Not only would I go back to Devil’s Alley and order the Fried Green Tomatoes again; I already have.

Thank you thank you thank you! Ever since that quais-Southern comfort food place–whose name totally escapes me– closed in the Bellevue about 10 years ago (Zanzibar moved into the space), I have not been able to find fried green tomatoes in Philly. I am heading over right now to get my feed on–I might be there for lunch every day to make up for a decade without. Thank you!
