The Extraordinaires present “Ribbons of War”
1026 Arch Street
The Extraordinaires are a band who made a record, made a book out of that record, and have now made a musical out of that book. See the thing about it earlier.

If you went to the Philadelphia Fringe Festival in years past you might remember a large, carnival looking tent posted in the middle of Old City, I think it was on the corner of 4th and Race. It looked freaky but inviting and inside was a crude bar and stage. This was the Fringe Festival’s Cabaret and it offered Fringe goers a place to get a beer, chit-chat and rest up before or in between Fringe Events. [...]

Famous local git-r’-done dude and general positive influence Jay Purdy has at least three high concept bands that I know of. One of them, The Extraordinaires (with fellow South Philadelphians Peter Hurd, Jacob Wolf and Matt Gibson), is two years into a project called “The Ribbons of War.” It started with a fourteen song rock opera about a clipper captain’s love for an aviator. Then came the baroquely detailed book, and now, this week, we’ve got [...]

silkcity.jpg

I’ve always been a fan of Silk City even when it was just a dirty diner. But now that Mark Bee of N. 3rd fame has had his way with the place, I’m really hooked.

At first glance, the diner part of Silk City looks very much the same as it used to—only now it’s actually clean. The lounge area, where we dined, is a dark, sexy space decorated with artwork that probably wasn’t appropriate for my 16-year-old [...]

Post submitted by Chad Brown

Plastered majestically on the wall of a parking lot, smack dab in the middle of Philadelphia’s famous Italian Market, is Frank Rizzo. The former mayor and fixture was rendered in 1995 by respected artist and educator Diane Keller and seems to float above his stronghold with hunger in his eyes. A popular place for speeches and purposeful gatherings, rumor has it of a sentry who will brush up the mural anytime some enterprising [...]

On September 1 from 11am-8pm, Grasshopper will be celebrating its one year anniversary. There will be 20% off new merchandise, hours de vours, drinks, give aways and trunk shows by local designers. Go celebrate and check out this fantastic boutique. In honor of their one year anniversary, I wanted to talk with the owners, Tracy Lutz and Regina Mandell.

How did you come together to create Grasshopper?

“It grew out of our last endeavor together which was a women’s [...]

assembly.jpg

When sixties radical Phillip Bannowsky wandered from the University of Delaware to Chrysler’s assembly line, he ran smack into the spiritual and political bad trip he calls Autoplant: a poetic monologue (Broken Turtle Books LLC, 2007), to be presented in this year’s Philly Fringe Festival. Using the heightened language of poetry to talk about the nitty-gritty of labor, Bannowsky recounts episodes from his days with Students for a Democratic Society, the tragicomic coping mechanisms of assembly line [...]
