One of my favorite spots for great beer and home-style cooking is Ludwig’s Biergarten. I have been going to Ludwig’s for several years, and I’m never disappointed by the experience. Yes, it helps that the Bavarian restaurant is themed and feels like an old pub in Munich, but it’s the food and drink that really make Ludwig’s amazing (and sometimes the servers wear dirndls).

I usually try one of my standby beers like Leffe Blonde, Gaffel Kölsch or Köstritzer, but this time I had the Weihenstephaner Hefe with refreshing lemon slices. The food they have makes me feel like I’m in my Oma’s kitchen (if I had an Oma). I love the Rotkraut (red cabbage), the Spätzle (like thin dumplings) and the Muscheln (mussels). The food is warm and seasoned just right and it always makes me feel cozy—even in the summer.

The beer list is exhaustive (if you like imports) and Ludwig’s always has a number of taps flowing. You can also get a “flight” of beer—a set of different beers for sampling. Don’t forget the sausages too! There are many exciting things on the menu, but the sausages never disappoint. I suggest trying the wurst platter—it’s the best!

About the Blogger

I’m a native Philadelphian that grew up far away (Alaska and Oklahoma), and after coming back to Philly for a relatively useless degree in Classical Languages at an overpriced private university, my love of this town kept me here. I live in South Philly and can be seen frequenting local gastro-pubs and watering holes on my old Schwinn. Words to describe me: beer, pickles, hot pink, shiny things, mahi mahi, photography, thrifting, grammar, editing, freelancing, blogging and crosswords. Dancing is my therapy and disco, new wave, electro and party jams always get me on the floor. I spend an inordinate amount of time watching films and foreign television programs--some of my favorites include Riget, The Prisoner, League of Gentlemen and Little Britain. Along the way I started collecting nicknames and I have a list that includes: Alaskan Snow Crab, Small Fry, Ice Queen, Snugglebutt, Kleines Frites, Chittabeep, Strudel and Lexicon of Love--but I'll also respond to, "Hey, you!"

I love Ludwigs!! All the waitresses are very friendly and they KNOW their beers. You can ask them anything and they know. They have the best mussels in Philly. I have to admit I love the mussels so much I haven’t ventured any further on the menu. People who hang out here are really friendly too. I have had people just sit down at my booth and start introducing themselves and talking to me and my friends. I like that because I will talk to anyone!!

Hello beer lovers!
I am also a Ludwig’s fan. I’ve been drinking there since I was…well, not old enough to drink there…
I love it. I know the owner, a jovial German man named Paul, quite well. He hires people who know their beer very well, some being from the countries where the beer is brewed. I’d have to agree with the above mention of Weihenstephaner. It comes from one of the oldest breweries in the world and is the perfect summer refresher. Any wheat is a treat. Try also Franziskaner HefeWeizen. (Hefe meaning “yeast” and Weiss meaning “wheat”) The food is good, try the potato pancakes and the German sausage is a staple.
One additional note:
I’ve heard a buzz that Paul is selling Ludwig’s.I’m not sure what this will mean for the mad king’s namesake, but I’m hoping it’s not for worse.
We’ll see…
