This Sunday was a sweltering one. I found myself growing stir-crazy in my place, and after far too much Nintendo Wii, decided it was time to venture a few blocks away to Old City. If you wanted nothing more then to sit inside your apartment and bask in the air conditioning, eatting ice cream and sipping soda, then you missed something rather special in Old City this past weekend… but don’t worry! It occurs almost every Saturday. You’re in luck.

I came across The Creative Collective’s Crafts & Fine Arts Fair going on in Society Hill, over on 2nd and Pine St. The show meets at the historic Headhouse Shambles and is full of local artists displaying their many works. It always amazes how Philadelphia is so full of gifted people and never fails to showcase that. From the Bazaar Star back in June to the Punk Rock Flea market just a few weeks ago, we have some great people creating beautiful things.

This stand particularly caught my eye. Handbags and purses made of recycled jeans and bras. Everything was well made and quite beautiful. The friends who I had with me, who were hailing from New Jersey, stood over this stand, oohing and ahhing as they felt the fabric and took note of the skillful patchwork.

The Creative Collective’s fair runs until mid-October, so you can swing by most Saturday from now until then. A fair created by artists and ran by artists, this is their 39th anniversary.

So go on out, buy some lovely things, and make sure we see them for a 40th. There are even children’s workshops, which makes this fun for the entire family.
