I like to write about record stores that are unique to our fine city and Phenomenal is just that store: half record store half studio.

Phenomenal Studios is run by one of Philly’s up and coming Mix tape DJ know as Bear One also know as Bear Heron. After working as a Def Jam Records Artist Development Rep., Bear opened the studio in the back of the store. Bear started working on his own Mix tapes and making others for Philly Artist like Dice Raw and Peedie Crak, just a few things to get his name out. Little did he know that Universal would offer him a record deal to produce the first legal mixtape.

Phenomenal Records is the number one CD and Music DVD store in North Philly. Owned by Jay Lansky, Phenomenal prides itself on service with expert music knowledge. (The staff knows their stuff). And why not, Ed Midi is at the counter. He has his ear to the street, the perfect day job for this up and coming Philly producer. Just like everywhere else on the east coast M.C. Battle videos are their biggest thing on the underground rap circuit. Almost all the crews have one or two, maybe four volumes.

Phenomenal has the largest Rap DVD selection in the city, so if you’re looking for Philly talent, I mean the dopest CDs and Video from North Philly’s finest MCs, this should be your first stop. When major artists are in town they make it a point to stop on by to see Jay and to give back to the fans that made them. Artists like Ghost face, Freeway, Fabulous and Method Man just to name a few.

I usually write about record stores that have a pretty big vinyl sections. Phenomenal has a small wax collection, but Phenomenal is not a beat digger’s type of place, this is the place you want to go to if you have a CD in the car and you need some sounds to ride to. Stop in and tell a friend.
