The Garden Courts
Philadelphia is swiftly becoming a city hip to exercise. With the beautifully paved Schuykill River walk, jam packed Kelly Drive, cyclists and runners galore “” it is quite easy to walk, ride, or skateboard your heart into shape. But if, like me, you are a fan of the Woody Allen film aesthetic and prefer playing to working out, hitting one of the many outdoor tennis courts is totally the best “” especially when the weather is warm and the days are long.
My favorite spot is at 47th and Spruce in West Philly. There are 2 courts, which fill up fast, but if you are willing to wait a while, you can watch some skilled UPenn graduate students doing their best Andre Agassis before launching into your own game. A dog park right next to the court means you can wink at the adorable local hounds while chasing stray tennis balls. On the other side of the courts is a lovely community garden and while you play, the aroma of beef rice stick from the Vietnamese restaurant at 43rd and Spruce wafts up the street.

If those courts are full, you can keep heading west to some really nice and new courts (there are three total) at 63rd and Christian in the Cobbs Creek Recreation Area. On a weekend, you’ll be smelling family barbecues instead of Vietnamese food.

Oh how I miss Philly. I can’t wait to hit these courts in summer AND Dr. Viv’s garden right next door, priceless!
