Cantina Los Caballitos

How have we not covered Cantina Los Caballitos yet? The newest addition the Royal Tavern family of establishments, Cantina is one of my most favorite restaurants and bars in town. Cantina can be found near the corner of 12th and Morris in South Philly (it’s the big orange building), beckoning me with the promise of brunch on the weekends, happy hour every weekday and, most recently, daily lunch. Cantina has a changing list of scrumptious specials (including various ceviches and salads) and vegan desserts from Vegan Treats. The menu has exciting things like goat, suckling pig, quesadillas, nachos and cactus salad.
I usually go for a special like the fried plantains and mahi mahi tacos (now on the menu!), or get a vegan burrito. The food is amazing and the fresh salsas are delicious. I really can’t say enough good things about Cantina. The service is friendly and helpful, and the food is always hot. When you visit, you have the option of sitting at the detached bar area, the regular dining area or the outdoor seating.
For the weekends, try Cantina for brunch. Huevos rancheros, chilaquiles (like a tortilla casserole) and their special Bloody Marys and Marias will fill you up. Oh, did I mention they have margaritas? At any given time Cantina has ten or more margaritas to choose from and too many different tequilas to count. I like the frozen pineapple margarita and the prickly pear margarita, and at happy hour the specials make it possible to try all of them (if you’re brave).
Pop in to Cantina when you’re in the area and sample some of the neo-Mexican fare and funky cocktails”"you won’t be disappointed!

Wit Whiz says:
VEGETARIANS BEWARE!
Cantina’s refried beans at breakfast have BACON in them.
It’s not listed on the menu and when I was there, they acted like it was no big deal.
Cantina used to be my favorite place, but lately the service has been pretty crummy.
