Fringe Preview: Identity of Magenta

Friday Night I went to check out the Theater of Stars “Identity of Magenta”. The performance was held at the African American Museum of Philadelphia. This building is located on the corner of 7th and Arch Street, and it is full of our nation’s history. It’s a museum that I should visit more often.

Identity of Magenta is a story about a man and a woman who are in an inter-racial relationship. She’s an artist and he’s an architect. She likes color, he likes black and white. One of the few things they can agree on is physical love stimulated by her magenta bra. The dialogue was somewhat naïve in terms of diversity, particularly in its use of stereotypes “” the white man, unable to “loosen up” and feel and express deep emotions, the black woman, free and emotionally expressive but unable to be satisfied with herself and her situation.

After the performance I had a chance to talk with the cast. They were nervous because it was their first show and they didn’t know how well they performed. Besides a few forgotten lines, it was a pretty good performance. Theater of Stars will be performing three more shows September 14th 15th and 16th. I encourage people to see it and lend the actors your support. This is The Philadelphia Fringe Festival. That is what it is all about. Inspiring young people to believe in their work and feel confident in what they do.

Not so sure says:

Oh come on, let’s call an amateurish, pointless play what it is–a well-intentioned waste of time.
