Subhumans & World Inferno Friendship Society
Get stoked for a show that showcases the range and diversity of punk.
The Subhumans are legends (yes overused, but totally appropriate in this case) of British “Peace Punk”, formed in 1980. The Subhumans play very musical and intelligent but angry and focused anarchist punk. I personally have painted their logo on many a leather jacket back in the day, including my own. The Subhumans are one of the best examples of a British rock band where the singer has a prominent English accent even while screaming.
World Inferno Friendship Society is NYC’s disturbingly cult-like, circus-related, Halloween-tent-revival orchestra. THE WIFS toothily and engagingly explain in carnival-like, gypsy-punk, original Broadway production numbers how you-yes, you-can go from a simple understanding of Zen and the Art of Breaking Everything in this Room to throwing Just the Best Party. Well at least that is what the R5 Productions page said, I’m not exactly sure how to explain this band but that is as accurate a statement as one can hope for, an experience not to be missed. Scoats talked about their recent Fringe thing here.
Once, about ten years ago, I was having a conversation with Jack, the singer of WIFS, during the break between bands. I had never seen WIFS and don’t remember why I was talking to Jack and had no idea he was in the band, but the band starts up and we were still talking in front of the stage and at one point at a seemingly natural end to the conversation, Jack gracefully steps onto the low stage and sassily grabs the microphone and hits his opening line on cue”"what showmanship!
Also playing the show are Philadelphia’s own Witch Hunt and Boston’s, Energizer Bunny-like, Toxic Narcotic. Witch Hunt are a bit more brutal but with melody, and are just an awesome band, be sure to check them out as they are one of the Philly bands that headline national and European tours and sell thousands of records but seem to get no local press coverage.
