PARAPHRASE/NEXUS with Soundfield

PARAPHRASE/NEXUS with Soundfield

PARAPHRASE/NEXUS is a series produced by Philadelphia based multi-media/movement/music company Perpetual Mvmt<>Snd. This monthly event hosted by NEXUS will collaborate tonight, October 24th with Soundfield, a musical presentation apparatus with a mission towards international cultural exchange as part of its “Crosswork” series.

Composer and Soundfield founder Gene Coleman will debut a work entitled “Missing Links, part 1″ which was created in collaboration with artist and knitter (yes, as in two needles and yarn making scarves) Sarah Mann O’Donnell performed by Ensemble Noamnesia [Kevin McFarland (cello); Ari Striesfeld (violin); Jason Calloway (cello); Katt Hernandez (violin); Evan Lipson (bass); Gene Coleman (conductor/bass clarinet); Sarah Mann O'Donell (amplified knitting needles)]

This performance was inspired by the current exhibition at NEXUS/foundation for today’s art, Metaphoric Vinyl, a collection of work from ten artists with the purpose of re-hashing a bit of nostalgia by creating specific analog art in a digital age. These artists utilized the Roland Camm-1 Servo, a machine commonly used in the sign making industry to create personalized new pieces out of vinyl. Local artist, musician, and curator for the PARAPHRASE series Bilwa gives charge to the artists he invites in a way that nurtures creating something that responds to, elaborates on, or otherwise addresses the work that’s hanging in the space…

More after the jump!

Though the correlation between analogue vs. digital art and a premiere of original music composed for acoustic instruments and knitting needles is a bit of a stretch, it is without a doubt a unique concept to forge and indicative of the many self or collaboratively-curated, multi-disciplinary type of events that Philadelphia seems to be nurturing thoroughly these days.

Perpetual Mvmt<>Snd co-director Emily Sweeney states “It’s never necessarily a direct line between the exhibition and the work it inspired in PARAPHRASE – tracing that line back is part of the fun of seeing the performance. It’s like watching someone give a lecture on the artwork, but with out using any words. It allows people to watch another artist approach a work that they have approached themselves, and see what results from that interaction. [There are] no grand statements – no absolute truths or anything – just the pleasure of observing artists encounter and appreciate art.”

Winter PARAPHRASE installments include Wednesday, November 28th with dancer/choreographer Kathy Ochoa, and performance artist J. Makary. They will offer performances inspired by an exhibition of work by three new NEXUS members: Bilwa, Tasha Doremus, and Bonnie Scott.

Also December 19th and January 23rd includes performances by dancer/choreographers Meg Foley, Allison Lorenzen, and Rebecca Patek, as well as a sound/video performance by Aaron Igler inspired by YUMMY, a show featuring food-inspired works by NEXUS members and guest artists.
