Phillies Headed to the Playoffs
The 14 year-long drought has finally ended. The Philadelphia Phillies won the National League East and clinched a playoff spot on the last day of the season yesterday in front of 40,000 towel-waving fans at Citizens Bank Park. The Phils’ 6-1 win over the Washington Nationals coupled with the N.Y. Mets’ 8-1 loss to the Florida Marlins put the team in the playoffs for the first time since 1993.
This team is something special. Injuries to several key players, pitching meltdowns, and trailing the Mets by 7 games on September 12th, the Phightins kept fighting and it finally paid off. Watching the games down the stretch, I can honestly say I’ve never been more proud to be a Philadelphia sports fan. The fans were incredible and several team members said they fed off the energy that the crowd brought to the ballpark during the last week.
If you somehow missed it yesterday, Citizens Bank Park was a rockin’. Check out the700level.com for the final three outs. http://www.the700level.com/2007/09/the-final-three.html
The Phils first playoff game is at Citizens Bank Park this Wednesday, October 3rd against either the San Diego Padres or Colorado Rockies. Time TBD.
Meanwhile, I just came from the rally at City Hall, where thousands of fans came out to show their support for the team’s NL East championship. I can only imagine what Broad Street will look like after they win the World…. OK I won’t say it but you get the idea.
