Headhouse Farmers’ Market

By Katherine Silkaitis

Appropriately located in the historic Headhouse Square, where markets have taken place since 1745, the Headhouse Farmers’ Market is a community event, bringing together local farmers and producers with city residents. Neatly contained within the stone pillars of the Headhouse Shambles, the vendors sell everything from wine to bread and ice cream to cheese, alongside the traditional vegetable and fruit fare. As a lively band plays and families shop, it’s easy to to take this market, and farmers’ markets across the city, for granted.

The Headhouse Farmers’ Market, like its citywide brethren, is the product of the Food Trust, a local nonprofit that works to ensure “everyone has access to affordable, nutritious food.” Unlike like some markets, Headhouse operates both Saturdays and Sundays, often featuring different vendors each day: while Sunday is heavy on local produce, Saturday features local crafts and the Mennonite farmers who are unable to work the Sunday markets.

While the Saturday market is in its ninth season, this year is the first year the Food Trust has operated the Sunday market at the location. And according to site manager Nicky Uy, it’s been very successful. “It’s exceeded all expectations and the more people support it, the more [vendors] we can add to it,” Uy said.

While fall has (finally) arrived, the market isn’t closing up shop. Open until Dec. 23, the fall and winter bring new sets of vegetables and products to the market.
