Times have changed. Those who say the East Coast doesn’t have good Mexican food must visit the Headhouse Farmers’ Market. The tacos, quesadillas, and huaraches (tortillas filled with beans, salsa, onions and queso fresco) sizzling “a la plancha” at the Los Taquitos de Puebla stand will certainly revise their thinking.

This past Sunday, my friends and I enjoyed the most delectable breakfast: pork tacos — a perfect package of meat, salsas, cheese and toppings, distinguished by a thin slice of warm pineapple and a sprinkling of the freshest cilantro; and squash blossom quesadillas — homemade tortillas (made-to-order) filled with squash blossoms, Oaxaca cheese and epazote, a pungently flavored herb native to Central and South America. Yum!

And exciting news: The Headhouse Market has been extended until December 23, making five more Sundays available this year to enjoy these amazing Mexican delicacies. And if you can’t make the market, this food can always be enjoyed at the stand’s restaurant (1149 S. 9th Street). At Headhouse, visit over 25 local vendors, supplying the freshest produce, the tastiest fudge (Betty’s Tasty Buttons), the fairest coffee (Joe Coffee Bar), the rawest cheese (Birchrun Hills Farm) and so much more!
