Alan Licht at Kelly Writer’s House Tonight

Tonight, the ICA is hosting a lecture by avant guitar sounder and music writer Alan Licht at the Kelly Writer’s House. As a guitarist, Licht has teamed up with just about every notable out music personality to come down the pike, and has dropped some very serious sides on his own. As a magazine personality in Forced Exposure and The Wire, he’s been both a major critical force and a key developer of the language used to discuss avant “rock” music. His writing is clear, loving and often hilarious in the broad sweep of its nerdiness.

Licht is out on the lecture circuit with his new book, “Sound Art: Beyond Music, Beyond Categories.” He calls Sound Art the marriage of visual art and music, beginning with Dada and John Cage. His book tracks the development of emerging Sound Art forms through the convergence of the independent music and art worlds, and into the work of LaMonte Young, Laurie Anderson, Sonic Youth and the rest of the modern canon.

To get a feel for Alan’s modes, literacy for his subject, and the loving accessibility he’s able to craft around the totally obscure, check out his Minimalism Top 10 III that he did for Volanic Tongue last summer.
