Give Baum’s Dancewear a Twirl
As I mentioned before, I am starting tap dance lessons and needed some tap shoes. Since it was on my way, I stopped into a small dance shop. The man working there not only completely ignored me, he never even looked at me! After five or so minutes, I just walked out. I figured that if he’d wanted my business, he’d have tried a little harder. I decided to walk the extra 20 minutes and go to Baum’s Dancewear on 11th.
Just around the corner from Jefferson Hospital and the Midtown Diner, Baum’s has been around since 1887″”outfitting all kinds of dancers and performers. They are a full-service dancer’s paradise, replete with shoes, costumes (off the rack and made-to-order), workout wear, makeup and helpful staff. As I gazed up at the various shoes on the wall, I knew I’d need some serious help.
The young woman who helped me was friendly and accommodating. She showed me how my shoes should fit and didn’t push me to get the most expensive pair. I was happy to hear that she was also a tap dancer; she told me that tap is a lot of fun. I ended up with some black oxford tap shoes made especially for Baum’s. I started clicking around my apartment the minute I got home. I hope I don’t drive my roommate and neighbors crazy…

I went to Baum’s for shoes recently too, and I totally agree that they’re nice folks. Even after I told the girl helping me that I wasn’t a dancer, and I just needed to look like one, she still took the time to help me find shoes that fit right.
