Operation Understanding

Operation Understanding

What are you doing Thursday, November 15th from 6:00 “” 8:00? Well, if you’re like me and you’re starting to feel all warm and fuzzy as the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, you’ll think about paying it forward. You’ll think about how to make the world a better place and then you’ll think! Hey, I’ve got to get myself to One Logan Square (18th & Cherry Sts) for The Young Friends of Operation Understanding Annual Fundraiser Event.

For the price of a trendy sweater at H&M ($40.00 per ticket in advance/$50.00 at the door/only $25.00 with valid student I.D.) you can really make a difference by sharing uniting and inspiring others and fostering peace and understanding right here in our great city. Funds raised will go towards funding the summer trip that is taken by students. They are so deserving and guess what? They are the future leaders of this town! (Ms. Loree Jones, Managing Director of the City was an OU student participant!) Also, expect student speakers that will make you laugh and cry as they tell of their past summer OUchangedmylife experiences. Plus there will be tons of Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream on hand and other goodies. There will be a memorable reception and a fabulous silent auction featuring lots of cool stuff for a steal; hotel stays, Center City dining certificates, and more.

Learn more about Operation Understanding after the jump!

Operation Understanding is not an organization to teach people about surgical procedures. (As my “funny” friend Linda throught). It’s mission is much more about the heart and not so much the cardio kind! but more about the compassionate, unifying and accepting kind. OU’s mission is to develop African-American and Jewish leaders who are educated about each other’s experiences and can effectively lead their communities to a greater understanding of their cultural differences and similarities. How do they do this you ask? Well, it’s all about the trip. Each summer the OU board indentifies future leaders, exposes them to cross-cultural experiences here in Philadelphia, throughout the US and even abroad. The program begins a life long process of building bridges, cultivating allies and forging lasting friendships across cultural, racial and religious boundaries. OU brings its message of tolerance to thousands of Philadelphia area residents and shares its model of cultural understanding across all races. Amen!

Last summer selected high school students from all across the Greater Philadelphia area traveled to Israel and Africa together as a group. And, as a result, they will never be the same. The friendships that were formed among the group as well as the people in the places that the visited are like no other. These students will go back to their schools and reinforce how important it is that we all get along! it’s a small world after all.
