Parrandas Celebration

Parrandas Celebration

From November to January, the people of the world start feeling a little more cheerful than usual. That’s because the holiday season has started; this is the time where people join family and friends and remember all the good times throughout the previous year.

For the Latino culture, this is a thrilling time because Latinos get to celebrate so many holidays. One of the biggest events in Puerto Rican culture is the Pararrandas, better known as Christmas caroling. And what makes this so different from regular caroling? Well, Puerto Ricans pretend to be jíbaros (or claim to be from el campo) during the holidays. They also have a “pava” (traditional straw-hat) in storage just for Christmas.

If you would like to see or even join these events, Join Taller Puertorriqueño’s traditional “Parrandas” for three days of music and culture in El Corazón Cultural del Barrio in North Philadelphia. Be sure to bring your instruments and sing along with the Pleneros del Batey and friends, the traditional holiday music.

Throughout the three day parrandas celebration, you’ll get a chance to visit various locations around the area. You’ll stop by excellent restaurants including El Bohio and Mis Viejos, the largest Latino music store in Philadelphia Centro Musical and exciting cultural sites like Raices Culturales Latinoamericanas. The parrandas will take place December 13th through December 15th.
