Savoring the Salt – A Celebration of the Film Work of Toni Cade Bambara

This Thursday and Friday, Scribe Video Center will be celebrating the work of Toni Cade Bambara. An activist, feminist, filmmaker and writer, Bambara’s work has influenced independent filmmakers the world round. After much acclaim for her writing (The Salt Eaters, Gorilla and My Love), Bambara’s career tuned to film. Philadelphia was lucky enough to be Bambara’s home for the last ten years of her live, 1986 to 1995, when she taught at Scribe and worked on the award winning The Bombing of Osage Avenue and W.E.B. Du Bois: A Biography in Four Voices.
Savoring the Salt – A Celebration of the Film Work of Toni Cade Bambara begins Thursday evening at the International House with a discussion panel made up of individuals who worked with Bambara over the years and will be followed by a screening of The Bombing of Osage Avenue. On the panel will be poet and Temple professor Sonia Sanchez, filmmaker and Scribe founder Louis Massiah, cinematographer Arthur Jafa, editors of Savoring The Salt: The Legacy of Toni Cade Bambara (Temple University Press) Linda Janet Holmes and Cheryl A. Wall, and writer Dr. Clyde Taylor.
Friday, as part of their Storyville series, Toni Cade Bambara Narrates will be held at the Scribe Video Center. Bambara narrated the two films that will be screened: John Akomfrah’s Seven Songs for Malcolm X and Nadine Patterson’s Anna Russell Jones: Praise Songs for a Pioneering Spirit.
