Spicy Bamboo at Pattaya Grill

Pattaya Grill cooks up some of my favorite Thai food in West Philly. The restaurant seems deceptively small from the Chestnut St. storefront, but their enclosed back patio seating area is a sunny, verdant space to savor your meal. Everything is served in enormous portions, with no scrimping on a variety of vegetables to fill out the layers of flavor in each dish.
The Spicy Bamboo Shoots are a healthy and original way to enjoy heaps of spicy veggies. The bamboo shoots themselves have just the right lush and crunchy texture, and potent hints of spice. I ordered it with tofu, which absorbed the sauce’s marinade into its crispy casing well, as did the Chinese mushrooms and freshly wilted Thai basil.
I’ve heard that bamboo shoots are chock full of vitamins, and I for one would readily trade in some multi-vitamin tablet for a plateful of Pattaya’s spicy bamboo.
