St. Eric’s Fair & Lucia Fest: Tonight!

Old City may be the oldest neighborhood in Philadelphia but the oldest building still intact and functioning is located in Queen’s Village at Front & Christian. Known as “Gloria Dei”, Old Swedes Church has been in existence since the late 1690′s. It’s been said that Christian street was named after Queen Christiana who was Queen of the Swedes-hence Queen’s Village.

This weekend will feature a holiday celebration combining a number of Swedish Holiday traditions in what is called the Lucia Fest. This colorful musical pageant is centered around a young woman who is dressed in white with a crown of candles singing her traditional song, “Sankta Lucia” while on her way to help deliver hot coffee and a warm Lucia bun to all the residents of the home. She will not be alone since a large entourage of young girls will be joining her in this candlelight procession.

And there will also have St. Eric’s Fair, a Christmas bazaar that specializes in Scandinavian imports for it is the holiday season!
