Tonight: Tales from the Wu

Tonight at the I-House they’re showing the films Wu: The Story of the Wu-Tang Clan and Chief Rocker Busy Bee: The Architect Vol. 1. The Chief Rocker flick is ten old school minutes about the classic MC, while the Wu video stretches to nearly an hour and a half, documenting this unstoppable team’s rise from the slums of Shaolin to their world hip hop takeover.

If all you know about the Wu is that ODB was once arrested at the Gray’s Ferry McDonald’s, this is where you get educated. Beyond the thirteen odd years waves their fleet of records and related project have been making, the Clan have had an incalculable impact on hip hop media and culture through their sweeping involvement in fashion, video games, and film. The group’s constituents are not only rap icons, but pop culture moguls, who command great power both on the mic and in shaping the hip hop imagination. Each member’s Wu Tang persona is a work of art in itself: born entertainers, these dudes will definitely work it out.

Beware: this is almost certainly going to be profane, over the top and soaked in irony and self-awareness. Don’t bring 12 year olds who won’t get it. Director Gerald Barclay will be there in person to talk about it afterward.
