The Hacktory

Josh Kopel is a techy of techies. A co-founder of Make Philly and an all around master of things made by hand to beep, blink, and transmit ones and zeros, Josh has started “The Hacktory.” The Hacktory promotes the use of technology in the arts and is incubated as a project within Nonprofit Technology Resources: providing classes for artists/craftspeople/makers, community events, shared facilities and equipment, artist-in-residents programs, art sales, and materials exchange. This Saturday, The Hacktory leads a class in Arduino building.

What is an Arduino and why would I want to build one? The Arduino is an open-source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use hardware and software. It’s intended for artists, designers, hobbyists, and anyone interested in creating interactive objects or environments. Basically a small circuit board, the Arduino senses environmental stimuli by receiving input from a variety of sensors and can affect its surroundings by controlling lights, motors, and other actuators. The microcontroller on the board is programmed using its own programming language and development environment in correspondence with open-source software.

The $200 enrollment fee is a little steep but includes all materials (Arduino board, prototyping supplies, and electronic components). Enrollment is limited to 14 people, so reserve your spot as soon as possible.

Editor’s Note: The class is sold out! But, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still check out MakePhilly or their sweet events. Check out the MakePhilly and Hacktory website for future events, and this fun write up by Martin on a past MakePhilly event.

About the Blogger

I'm a recent post graduate teacher now working in arts administration among 1,000 other odd jobs (like a record label, theater management, free-lance photography/faux-journalism/faux-modeling, and faux-rock star). I love taking advantage of every dinning, and weirdo arts/music thing I can find to entertain myself in this fine city. I currently reside on South Street where I plan to live for the rest of my life or until my rent gets too high, the latter more likely to happen very soon.

Josh Kopel Says:

Thanks for the thumbs up!

To be clear I am only one of the people involved starting and organizing the hacktory. We try to focus on the organization as opposed to the people in it, but you can get the full list of organizers on our about page. Everybody has been putting a lot of hard work into this, and it is all starting to pay off!

We are going to be offering a bunch of classes in the coming months. For instance, we have a cool, geeky, and inexpensive valentines class on the site now. We are also putting together a shared fabrication workshop for folks who don’t have access to tools and technical assistance at home.

We welcome anyone and everyone who is interested in the current creative explosion in Philadelphia to come and find out what we are up to!

About the Blogger

Hi! I'm Eric. I'm a Springsteen-loving, Bon-Jovi singing Jersey boy who recently up and left, relocating to the awesome city of Philadelphia. I'm a full time graduate student at Arcadia University and work for GPTMC, causing my coworkers to wonder if I have any kind of life. I don't. I enjoy photography, writing, reading, and playing Halo III. I spend a lot of time fussing over my chinchilla, Mittens. He's adorable, and you'll love him.
