Here’s an afternoon election times FYI: former Secretary of State and Ambassador to the UN Madeleine Albright is speaking at the Central Library on Tuesday at noon. Her new book is called “Memo to the President Elect: How Can We Restore America’s Reputation and Leadership?” in which she argues that said president elect must “restate the case for, and redefine the content of, American leadership. This is not 1808 or 1908. If the tools of American power are allowed to rust, alternative powers will fill the void.”
Albright was the first woman to hold the office of Secretary of State. She has a huge collection of patriotic brooches and she enjoys cottage cheese with ketchup enjoys cottage cheese with ketchup (which horrifies me). She called out Slobodan Milosevic, was an architect for the many rounds of pre-9/11 sanctions and weapons inspections in Saddam Hussein’s Iraq, and (whether you like her or not) remains a strong and intelligent voice in foreign policy.
The Miami Herald ran an article and Q&A on the new book here
She wrote this editorial on the Bush administration’s foreign policy especially re: the state of the middle east for the Washington Post in May ‘06.

12PM, FREe!

I adore the former Secretary of State, but I find it virtually impossible to believe she leg presses 400 lbs (yes, I read the Deborah Solomon interview, and I didn’t believe it then, either).
