For the Love of Pig Iron 2008: THE SWINING

Heeeere’s Johnny! Or should we say, heeeere’s Dito?
Pig Iron Theatre hosts its annual benefit / cabaret / live-silent auction / freakshow / musical review / video competition at the Trocadero on Friday, January 25th. Philly’s award-winning, world renowned, premiere theatre company combines the experimental, the whimsical, and the very good-looking for theatre that pushes your buttons and tickles your fancies. This year’s theme is a haunted spoof on the 1980 Kubrick / King / Nicholson horror flick that promises to be a “crime against art and good taste dressed up as a fundraiser cabaret.”
This 2008 event will, of course, feature host and Pig Iron member Dito van Reigersberg as Miss Martha Graham Cracker (City Paper’s Readers’ Choice for Best Drag Act 2006), backed by The Swining Orchestra, with Andrew Nelson, Ned Sonstein, and Victor “Wictor” Fiorillo, guest starring Jeb Lewis of the Kandy Whales on guitar. Cabaret performances include: The death-defying Air Play Trapeze, the award-winning Ballet X with a rarely seen Matthew Neenan piece of choreography set to the classic song “Tell Me Something Good,” and James Sugg with excerpts from his original work, THE SEA.
Musical guests include: Friends’ Central Jazz Band and Girls Rock Philly.
Special guests include: Barrymore Award Nominee Geoff Sobelle as a freakish mind-reader, the stars of this year’s Fringe hit The Jersey Devil, performing with a 4-foot purple puppet. A dance-theatre re-enactment of the number 2 box-office draw of 1998, “Armageddon,” featuring Pig Iron Associate Artist Hinako Arao as the planet Earth and Jaamil Kosoko’s hip-hopera, “Wet. Purple. Love Affair.”
Also not to miss: Pig Iron’s first-ever Video Contest will be awarded and screened. As well as a gigantic silent auction and live auction hosted by Quinn Bauriedel. Come join, celebrate and benefit Pig Iron with a glass of (what else?) REDRUM.
