Relache Presents Sonic Cinema: Maya Deren

Relache Presents Sonic Cinema: Maya Deren

The day after the Academy of Music celebrates its 151st anniversary with an avant garde program that includes orchestrated Billy Joel songs, 21st century music high-scorers (is the pun intended? not even I know) Relache are going to be playing along to four short films by Maya Deren and two early silent comedies from 1906.

Deren produced some of the earliest American art film and hung out and worked with Duchamp, Cage and Breton. The Library of Congress selected her Meshes in the Afternoon (1943, to be screened at this event) as “culturally significant” enough for inclusion in its film registry. Relache’s subtle, considered sound will take it to the next. This is the only real avant garde Broad Street option this weekend.
