THURSDAY

Brothers and Sisters with Laris Kreslins and Al Paschys
700 Club, 700 N 2nd
Are Making Time massive the local innovators who came up with the promotional tactic of inventing genres to describe music that most dance nights play in a way that makes it seem as if that music is exclusive to their events? Like, you can hear “Around the World” anywhere on a Friday but it is only a cocainesexjam if it’s at Transit or Pure? Anyway. Laris and Al are billing their killer monthly at 700 as “Gypsy. Slager. Balto. Slavic. Turbofolk. Eurowave. Balkandisco. Panasian. Finofunk. Swederawk.” You are encouraged to get rad at this even though it doesn’t say so on the flyer. 9pm, free.

King Britt presents The Wiz
TLA/Philebrity Movie Night @ National Mechanics, 23 S 3rd
Philebrity is screening Friday videos hosted/curated by Philly-famous locals. This week is King Britt showing The Wiz, starring Richard Pryor, Michael Jackson and Diana Ross.
Free, 7pm.

Pig Iron’s The Swining
The Troc, 10th and Arch
Writeups to follow soon!

Super Furry Animals
Starlight Ballroom, 460 N 9th
The famous Welsh rock band. 8pm, $16

Growing, I.U.D., Steve Moore of Zombi
Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N Frankford
I think I took time out to see Growing seven times in 2004, when they were still jamming posi Earth 2 brainshakers. Like Earth, they’ve got a lot more movement in their sound these days, but the essential weight and hovering warmth is still all there. 9pm, $10

Derrick Carter
Fluid, 613 S 4th
Well, if it isn’t Chicago house legend Derrick Carter. Free before 11 on the list. $5 after, $10 all night not on list. 9pm.

Academy of Music 151st Anniversary Concert
Academy of Music, Broad and Locust
The Blue Man Group + Billy Joel + The Orchestra = avant garde. “As the “Grand Old Lady of Locust Street” commences her next 150 years, the Academy of Music 151st Anniversary Concert celebrates the theme “From This Moment On” with a program emphasizing the classical, the popular and the avant garde. [...] A special highlight of the evening is the Orchestra’s world premiere performance of a classical work composed by Billy Joel. The innovative Blue Man Group presents a new approach to symphonic performance with the Orchestra. The concert closes with Mr. Joel and The Philadelphia Orchestra performing a selection of his popular songs specially orchestrated for the occasion, continuing the Academy’s long history of presenting popular music.” $150, 7:30pm

Sonic Cinema: Maya Deren
Gershman Y, 401 S Broad St I posted about it here. 3pm.
