Chinese New Year Celebration: Tonight!

Was your New Years lame? Maybe it just hasn’t been your year to keep resolutions? Don’t worry, I’m giving you an opportunity to try again because in Chinatown, today is our New Years Eve party.

Oh? Chinese New Year follows a lunar cycle and on New Years Eve, February 6th - we’re throwing a party for the Year of the Rat. A big party filled with dragons, music, and noisemakers. Did I say noisemakers? I meant firecrackers! Having invented gunpowder, the Chinese like it when things go boom! How else are you supposed to scare away evil spirits?

Those born in the Year of the Rat are attractive, compassionate, open minded and brillant. Well at least, that’s what it said on the Chinese takeout menu. Our traditions for the New Year are a bit bizzare - not only am I not allowed to clean and sweep my home but there should be no cutting or washing my hair till the following morning, that way I don’t lose all the good luck received during the holiday. But good luck isn’t the only gift I get because my parents hand me a red envelope called “lai see” that is filled with money! Jackpot!

The parade starts at midnight in Chinatown. I know Mardi Gras was the evening before but how many extra chances will you get to ring in the new year? Just one… tonight! Let’s party.

About the Blogger

I was born in Philly but was made in China (it's tattooed on my right shoulder)! My parents thought I was quite the sovernior and appropriately raised me in Philly's chinatown. I'm first generation and proud of my culture and my city. Serving as a concierge at the Independence Visitor Center, I happily spend all day talking about Philadelphia to tourists and locals alike. It's an honor to be the host/tour guide of Chinatown for GPTMC's vodcasts. When I'm not pretending to be Mr. Philadelphia, I put on my ipod and cruise the town on my bicycle. People watching rules and so does Sugar Moms in Old City. I kill at skeeball! Living at the Italian Market is so great because it helps to fulfill my favorite pastime, eating!

The article was good. Its nice to see the link between the two hoods. Just one little error.. The Parade has never started at the Arch but we can always use the publicity.. Nice!
