Editor’s Note: Alas, Ludwig’s is closed for the time being, but if everything goes well, it will be reopening sometime in March with more beers on tap. Thanks, Philly Will Do.
A little over a year ago Gina noted that Ludwig’s was the main place where you can still be an adult while giving beer bong the old college try, and how: at the time, Ludwig’s was the 28th best place to enjoy a brew up in these fifty United States.
That said, I’m topping the bar on this here blog because my winter nights have largely gone the way of Wild Turkey and Netflix, but for two nights in the last month when I ventured out to eat Ludwig mussels. These Edward Island guys come steamed in a Hefeweizen, herb butter and garlic sauce in three variations: with cubed tomatoes, with bacon and roquefort, or with chipotle, paprika and cayenne.
My second visit confirmed that there is now nothing that will get me out of my house in this gray season with greater enthusiasm than the royal prospect of mussels with bacon and roquefort. This, partnered with the thought of a beer I have never heard of that will arrive at my table in a dazzling tower the size of many forties. Consider yourself encouraged to make a friend just to take them out on this very adventure.

While Ludwigs was a great place for a good ‘ole German Beer, unfortunately this classic has been closed down and sold to the owners of Vintage, around the corner. They’ll reopen it as Time which apparently will delight us with a large beer list, Traditional American “old school” fare and a mid-March opening (according to Zagat).

Dude. Ludwigs is closed. Been closed for 2 weeks.

Well, I guess all we can hope for is that they’ll have beer bongs at the newly revamped Ludwig’s. I hope they still have spatzle and rotkraut! Keep the Gaffel! Keep the Leffe! Keep the Franziskaner! Keep the moose head and the boar!

OUTRAGE!!! Where will I get German food? Ludwig’s had such pseudo-Bavarian charm–I spent many nights there having a blast over dinner, beer and dessert. I don’t think Philly needs another boring American restaurant for yuppies. I’m sad to see Ludwig’s go. Sadder than I should be, considering how mean some of the foreign servers were.
Geh mitt Gott, Ludwig’s.

it will “reopen” as a new place called Time - with different decor, menus, and beers. In other words, Ludwigs is just plain gone.
