A Little Bit of History in Your Neighborhood
Do you know who Arturo A. Schomburg is? If so, do you consider him African-American or Latino or even German for that matter? Better get to the Free Library and hit those history books, or better yet, join Taller Puertorriqueño for their annual Arturo Schomburg Symposium.
Taller’s 12th Annual Schomburg Symposium “Racism in Latin America: Historical Perspectives, Policies, Notions, and Practice” will be held on Saturday, Feb. 18th, 2008 from 9:30 a.m. “” 5:00 p.m. This symposium will focus on Latino societies and cultures developed upon the descendants of Latin American slaves in the Americas as they relate to the constructs of racism and its effects.
Speakers will include presentations by Dr. Sandra Andino, “Life-story of an Afro-Boricua in the City of Brotherly Love”, Education Director, Taller Puertorriqueño, Dr. George Reid, “Racial Democracy in Latin America: Fact or Fiction?” Department of History, University of Pittsburgh, PA, and a legal panel discussing “Legal Racism: Laws, Statutes, Enforcement and Consequences” with Juan Cartagena Esq., Civil Rights lawyer, New Jersey and Ebenecer López Ruyol Esq., Puerto Rican Commission Against Racism, Puerto Rico.
